Regulation height

The 76 cm figure is measured from the floor to the top of the playing surface, not to the underside of the table or the top of the frame, and it applies uniformly across the whole surface — a table that sags or sits unevenly is out of spec even if it measures correctly at the edges.

The net

The net is 15.25 cm high along its entire length, suspended between two posts that sit 15.25 cm outside each side line — so the net is wider than the table itself. The bottom of the net must run as close to the playing surface as possible with no gap, since any gap under the net lets a low, flat shot through untouched.

Most net-and-post sets include a small height gauge or clip specifically to check the 15.25 cm figure at both the centre and the sides of the net, since a net that's higher in the middle than at the posts — or the reverse — plays noticeably differently from a flat one.

Why 76 cm, and does it ever change

76 cm sits at roughly the height of an adult's mid-thigh, low enough that a stroke played standing at the end line naturally crosses the net with room to spare, and high enough that players don't need to crouch to reach low balls. It hasn't changed since the ITTF standardised table specifications, and it's identical across every sanctioned level of play, from a local club match to the Olympic final.

• The 76 cm figure and the 15.25 cm net height are both fixed regardless of the table's length or width — there is no separate 'doubles height'.
• Junior and mini-table versions sold for young children are shorter overall, but they are explicitly non-regulation practice equipment, not a smaller official spec.
• Outdoor concrete and steel tables in parks are almost always built to the same 76 cm regulation height, since it's poured or welded to spec rather than adjusted.

Room size and clearance

Table height rarely causes room problems on its own — the table sits well under most ceiling heights. The real space constraint is horizontal: players stand well back from the end line during a rally, so clearance behind each end matters more than height clearance above the table.

• Club and local competition uses a 10 m × 5 m playing area around the table.
• For recreational play, aim for at least 2 m of clear floor behind each end line, plus roughly 1.5 m on each side.
• A standard 2.4 m ceiling is more than enough height clearance for a lob or a high serve toss in a home setup.

Adjustable legs and uneven floors

Most folding and freestanding tables have adjustable feet, usually a threaded screw at the base of each leg, specifically to bring an uneven floor back to true 76 cm across all four corners. Concrete garage floors, older wooden floors, and outdoor patios are the most common culprits — check all four corners with a spirit level before assuming the table itself is out of spec.

For a permanently sited table, shimming under the legs works just as well as adjustable feet if the table doesn't have them, and is worth doing properly once rather than nudging the table before every session.
